  • CHEM prefix course grades must be C or better. Only one repeat is allowed to earn a C or better to stay in this major.

Admission Requirements for this Major

New freshmen admitted to USU in good standing qualify for admission to this major. A 3.0 GPA and 60 credits of coursework are required for admission to the Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP). 

Transfer students from other institutions or other USU majors need a 3.0 GPA to be admitted to the major. They also need 60 credits of coursework to be admitted to the STEP.

Students should contact the School of Teacher Education and Leadership (TEAL) for information on additional admission criteria. For application requirements visit teal.usu.edu

Students must complete the General Education Requirements .

  • CHEM 1220  will fulfill the Breadth Physical Sciences (BPS) requirement.
  • PHYS 2220  will fulfill the Integrated Studies requirement.
  • MATH 1210  will fulfill the Quantitative Literacy (QL) requirement.

Student must also complete the University Studies Depth Requirements .

Chemistry Program Requirements


  • Grade of C or higher is required for all CHEM prefix and STEP courses for Chemistry Teaching.
  • No CHEM prefix course may be taken on a pass/fail basis, except those courses which are only taught pass/fail.
  • No CHEM prefix course may be repeated more than one time to improve the grade to a C- or better.
  • All candidates for graduation with a Chemistry degree must complete a department exit survey prior to approval of graduation application and completion of the program.

Required Courses for the Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP)


To begin the admission process to the STEP program, students should see their Chemistry advisor at least two semesters before they begin Level I coursework and also meet with a Secondary Education (TEAL) advisor. STEP admission deadlines are March 1 for fall semester and October 1 for spring semester. STEP courses require a grade of C or better. Licensure Notification


This program typically leads to licensure and was designed to meet licensing qualifications in the state of Utah. If students wish to work in another state within the United States, they should review the qualifications for that state and the Education Licensure Compliance Table provided by School of Teacher Education and Leadership.
