Most of the courses listed below count for both the teaching emphasis and the teaching minor.

C. Level 3

Because student teaching requires a major commitment of time and energy, students should take only the course listed below during this semester. Students are also urged to forgo outside employment, if possible, during the student teaching experience.

Notes:

2 This Special Methods II course is taught under course number 5370.

3  CMST 3300  and CMST 5370  must be taken during the same semester, and should be the last courses taken for the minor. These courses should be taken just before student teaching. CMST 3300  and CMST 5370  are listed in both the STEP and minor requirements listings to clarify all minor requirements and when they should be taken during the STEP program. Contact the LPCS department head for availability of these courses but are currently offered Fall semesters when needed.

Speech Communication Minor—Teaching Emphasis without Secondary School Licensure (Minor 28 credits) (2.5 GPA required in major or minor classes)

It is possible to have a teaching emphasis within a minor in Speech Communication without receiving Secondary School teaching licensure. However, unless the student is an elementary education major, he or she would not be able to teach in Utah public schools (nor at many private ones). Graduating without licensure may allow employment at community colleges and universities.

In order to complete a Speech Communication Minor—Teaching Emphasis without Secondary School Licensure, students must fulfill all of the requirements listed under Section I (Communication Studies  and Linguistics Courses) of the Speech Communication Minor—Teaching Emphasis with Secondary School Licensure (25 credits), plus CMST 5370, for a total of 28 credits.  (CMST  3300 for the teaching minor is no longer required if doing non-licensure Speech Communication Teaching minor program.)
