About This Degree

Students pursuing the BA receive a degree in general theatre arts. This is a four-year program designed for students who want a more comprehensive liberal arts background in theatre. This emphasis prepares students for graduate study and is also appropriate for those entering the field of stage directing. This program provides students with the flexibility to pursue an additional major. The BA degree requires foreign language training and the completion of additional related study courses.

Students must apply for the Bachelor of Arts degree program as part of their separate application to the department and have an interview with the BA faculty. Acceptance is competitive and not guaranteed.

  • Department application required. Space is limited. Acceptance is not guaranteed.

Transfer students from other institutions or other programs at USU:

  • 2.75 GPA
  • Department application required. Space is limited. Acceptance is not guaranteed.

Additional Information


  • Minimum GPA for Admission:  2.75 overall 
  • Minimum GPA for continuance in the program and for graduation:  2.75
  • Minimum grade accepted in all major courses:  B-
  • Major requirements may not be taken on a pass/fail basis unless only offered as pass/fail

Departmental Requirements:

  • Freshman and sophomore students usher for each department production they are not involved in as actor or run crew.

  • Attend production strikes as assigned. Strike crew calls are posted during performance week.

 

Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree signifies proficiency in one or more foreign languages. Specifically, the BA requirement may be completed in one of the following ways:

  • Demonstration of proficiency in one foreign language by successful completion of one course at the 2020-level or higher (or its equivalent)

OR

  • Demonstration of proficiency in American Sign Language by successful completion of COMD 4920 and COMD 4780 and by passing an exit interview

OR

  • Demonstration of proficiency in two foreign languages by successful completion of the 1020 course level in one language and the 2010 course level in the second language (or its equivalent)

OR

  • Completion of an upper-division (3000-level or higher) foreign language grammar or literature course requiring the 2020 course level (or its equivalent) as a prerequisite. Conversation courses cannot be considered for satisfying this requirement.

Required Theatre Arts Core Courses (21 credits)


Required Theatre Arts courses for all emphases and concentrations in the Department of Theatre Arts except those with an Acting emphasis. Acting students have a slight modification in their required core.

Theatre Practicum Requirement (6 credits)


  • 1 credit(s) Take a total of 6 credits of production practicum.
  • Note: Students should complete THEA 1513  and THEA 2203  before taking THEA 2555 

    • Register for Practicum in the following areas: 
      • Costume 
      • Paint & Props
      • Scenic
      • Run Crew 

    *Lighting/Sound Practicum is available by special permission

Theatre Electives (4-6 credits)


Two courses minimum.

Any additional theatre electives from the lists above, with the THEA prefix, may be applied here.

Open Electives


Total elective credit is determined by General Education courses taken, degree type selected, additional credits earned, and any additional math or other prerequisite courses needed. Please consult your Academic Advisor for details.
