About This Degree

The kinesiology degree at USU provides three different options for students who wish to pursue careers in exercise science, physical therapy, or physical education. In all of these areas, students study the psychological, neurophysiological, and biomechanical/biophysical aspects of human movement.Through mentoring, students are given the opportunity to conduct undergraduate research. The department collaborates with state health programs, parks and recreation programs, and local and regional school districts to provide students with opportunities for hands-on experience and professional training.

Physical Education Teaching Emphasis: This emphasis prepares students to teach or coach physical education activities in grades K-12.

Major Requirements (73-83 total credits)


  • Program Graduation Requirements: 2.0 overall GPA
  • Coursework may not be taken for a pass/fail grade, except KIN 4300  and KIN 5630 .
  • The Physical Education Teaching minor cannot be paired with this teaching major.
  • If a student pursues STEP, please refer to the STEP section further down for additional grade and GPA requirements.

Physical Education Teaching Emphasis Requirements (28 credits)


I. Prerequisites (19 credits required)


Complete all the following courses. Math or statistics only choose one course and check University catalog or academic advisor for prerequisites to enroll. BIOL 2320 and BIOL 2420 must be completed before enrolling in KIN 3250 and KIN 4100 in the major.

Complete all the following courses:

Complete all the following courses. BIOL 2320  and BIOL 2420  must be completed before KIN 3250  and KIN 4100 .

V. Optional Major Electives (3-6 creditsl)


Either course is not required for the major, but recommended to take.

Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) Admission Requirements


  • 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Three credits of English Composition with a C+ grade or higher
  • Three Breadth courses completed (minimum grades of C)
  • Cleared background check through the Utah State Board of Education (BCI/FBI)
  • Completion of a minor is no longer required for PE Teaching, but a minor or a teaching endorsement is strongly encouraged
  • Completion of Application for Admission to Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP)
  • All teacher education and major courses (KIN) require a grade of C or higher.
  • PPAT Exam, a portfolio, and an interview are required before licensure. PRAXIS exam may be required for minor, depending on the minor.
  • Application is required for student teaching

Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) Course Requirements (28 credits)


NOTE: Students are permitted to enroll in ITLS 2500  and SCED 3210  prior to being admitted to the STEP Program. All other teacher education courses can only be taken after being admitted, and KIN 4300  and KIN 4900  should be planned to complete during a fall semester. Must maintain a grade of C or better in major content (KIN) and STEP coursework and maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA and 3.0 GPA in the major courses.

Open Electives (0-15 estimated credits)


Total elective credit is determined by General Education courses taken, degree type selected, additional credits earned, and any additional math or other prerequisite courses needed. Please consult your Academic Advisor for details.
