  • AUTO 0700 - CNG - CNG Conversions/Kit Installation


    56 contact hours

    This course will teach students the steps involved in the CNG conversion of a vehicle, as well as preparation and component installation procedures. Students will determine the correct location of all components, install them, and test them for safety/integrity. Post conversion, testing of the vehicle will confirm acceptable drivability and operation, and ensure proper functioning of emissions control devices.

  • AUTO 0710 - CNG - High Pressure Systems Inspection


    30 contact hours

    This course will offer the students the opportunity to learn about safety when working with high pressure compressed natural gas. Students will be introduced to natural gas fuel system components and the installation guidelines addressed by NFPA52.  We will address the applicable standards for fuel storage cylinders and pressure relief devices.  Last, students will perform a physical assessment of the CNG cylinders and system components.

    24 contact hours

    You will learn inspection of high pressure cylinders, Cylinder parts, Materials, Methods of construction, valves, PRD’s, Strengths and weakness , Cylinder Defueling, “when and why” procedures & safety practices. As well as hazards, storage and installation. This training follows the strict guidelines of both NFPA-52 and CSA Tank Inspection.

    Covers the principles of the automatic transmission system.     2 credits

    Students will complete checks necessary to analyze and diagnose automatic transmission systems. Lab assignments include major and minor repair procedures including disassembly, verifying clearances and specifications and reassembly to manufacturer specifications. Students will have the opportunity to complete all P-1 and P-2 NATEF tasks for this area of study. Completion of all tasks will require students to plan and use the time available wisely.

    3 credits

    Studies the theory of manual transmission, trans axles, drive shafts, axle shafts, and differential assemblies. A study of four wheel drive and clutch components as used in manual drive trains will also be included.

    2 credits

    Students will complete the removal, tear down, assembly, and installation procedure on a standard transmission, trans axle, differential assembly and clutch assembly. They will diagnose the need of required replacement parts on all manual drive train components. They will also complete all P-1 and P-2 NATEF requirements for this area of study.

  • AUTO 1400 - Suspension and Steering Theory


    3 credits

    Will study the theory of SRS Systems Manual, power steering systems, rack and pinion systems, McPherson Strut Suspension Systems, and short and long arm suspension systems. Will also study two and four wheel alignment procedures and steering geometry as well as tire wear problems. Students will also learn the theory behind tire and wheel vibrations. Where applicable, related math and physics will be taught.

    This course is the flight lab for AV 1900  and may be taken concurrently with AV 1900 . Activities include principles of flight, minor maintenance and drone flying skills.

  • AV 1920 - Drones: Intermediate Flight Lab


    3 credits

    The course is a follow-on to AV 1910 - Drones: Introductory Flight Lab . Students further develop their flying skills with more challenging drones. Emphasis is placed on logging additional flying hours, as well as programming technically advanced unmanned aircraft.

  • AV 1950 - Drones: sUAS Maintenance


    3 credits

    sUAS Maintenance is a course designed to help students understand both the physical maintenance work of maintaining sUAS as well as the documentation considerations involved in any type of aircraft maintenance. Students build their own quadcopter in this class.

  • AV 1960 - Drones: Aerial Photography


    3 credits

    Students learn the different aspects of aerial photography to include photo mosaics and video creation, and how to apply them. This is a project-based class and it is recommended that students have their own sUAS for class completion.

  • AV 1970 - Drones for Hire


    3 credits

    Drones for Hire is an internship-intensive class that helps students prepare for sUAS work in industry. Students learn how to write a drone-focused resume, interview for, and complete real-life or scenario-based projects using sUAS.

  • AV 1980 - Drones: Basic Guidance and Control


    3 credits

    Students learn how to program a sUAS, direct guidance for both fixed wing and rotary wing sUAS, and collect different kinds of data from the flights. Students analyze whether their collection methods meet their objectives.

    Students learn about small unmanned aircraft (sUAS) sensors, including different types, their uses, and applications in industry. Students gain knowledge in data collection methods and participate in data collection and analysis exercises during the course.

  • AV 2000 - Aerodynamics for Aviators


    3 credits

    This course provides a study of the physical principles of airplane aerodynamics. This increases appreciation of the factors affecting aircraft including performance, stability, and controllability. Attention is placed on special flight conditions that could be encountered by fixed-wing pilots.

    This course examines the history of aviation from its origins to modern day through events, individuals, aircraft, technology, and policies. Students analyze the explosive impact aviation had on the economy, military, and society.

  • AV 2160 - Aircraft Systems for the Professional Pilot


    3 credits

    The student will obtain a working knowledge of the three aircraft they will be flying during their pilot training at USU: the Diamond Star DA40, Piper Arrow PA28R200 and the Twin Star DA42. The students will be able to identify and explain electric and hydraulic systems. They will gain a greater understanding of reciprocating engines, propellers, flight controls and landing gear systems.

    This course in flight training emphasizes the development of critical thinking, cross-country planning, and decision-making skills.
