Changes in Registration: Dropping, Withdrawing, and Late Semester Requests

Dropping

Students may add or drop courses in accordance with the add/drop deadline on the Registration Calendar . Continuing students who drop all their courses before the add/drop deadline, which is 20 percent of the course, do not need to reapply for admission when they return, if the students re-enrolls within three years of the last day of attendance. Students who have graduated or have been suspended from Utah State University (USU) must reapply for admission. Undergraduate students who drop all courses are encouraged to submit a Notification of Leave. If a student drops before 20 percent of the course is completed, their USU transcript will not show any indication of participation that semester and they may be eligible for a tuition refund.

Withdrawing

Students who drop a course after the add/drop deadline (which is 20 percent of the course), and before the withdrawal deadline (which is 60 percent of the course), the action is deemed a withdrawal. A ‘W’ grade notation is listed on the transcript which indicates the registration status of ‘withdrawn’. This will be permanently affixed to the student’s record for each course withdrawal. Tuition is not refunded for a withdrawn course. Continuing students who withdraw from all courses after the add/drop deadline (which is 20 percent of the course), and before the withdrawal deadline (which is 60 percent of the course), do not need to reapply for admission when they return if the student re-enrolls within three years.

Undergraduate students who withdraw from all their courses are encouraged to submit a Notification of Leave. International students who withdraw from all their courses must contact the Office of Global Engagement. Matriculated graduate students who withdraw from all their courses must contact the School of Graduate Studies office.

Late Semester Request

After 60 percent of the course, registration adjustments will not be approved except for extenuating circumstances. Students will receive the grade they earned for the work completed in the course and the grade will be included on the student transcript. Students with extenuating circumstances may file a request for Academic Record Adjustment (ARA) as outlined in the Academic Record Adjustment  policy.
