English Language Proficiency Requirement
To provide a foundation for academic success, USU requires all undergraduate international students to demonstrate a high level of English language proficiency. English language proficiency may be demonstrated by meeting one of the following. Students must ask the testing agency to send official exam scores to Utah State University (USU).
- High school/secondary school education completed in English (minimum 3 years) with satisfactory completion of English courses (excluding English as a Second Language courses).
- TOEFL internet-based (iBT) exam score of at least 71. The institution school code for USU is 4857.*
- IELTS overall band score of at least 6.0 with a minimum of 5.0 on each subscale.* (USU will not accept IELTS General Training test scores.)
- MET score of at least 52.
- Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced, or C2 Proficiency score of at least 169.
- SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) score of at least 500 or SAT Reading score of at least 27 on exams first administered March 2016. The institution code for USU is 4857*
- ACT English score of at least 18. The institution school code for USU is 4276.
- USU Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) Placement Exam score of at least 146 and a passing score of at least 31 on the IELI Writing Exam.**
- Completion of at least 24 credits of post-secondary/university coursework taught in the U.S. in English, excluding English as a second language courses, and taken at an accredited college/university.
*Scores that are more than two years old at the time the application is complete are not accepted.

Intensive English Programs
Undergraduate students who do not meet the required English language proficiency requirement, but are academically qualified, may be considered for admission to the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) on the Logan campus. If admitted, students must complete required English language courses before beginning their academic coursework.
Undergraduate students who believe they demonstrate English language proficiency should complete the English Language Proficiency Appeal form.
