QL/QI Accommodation

Accommodation for the University Studies Quantitative Literacy & Quantitative Intensive Requirements

The University provides a range of academic support and reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Even with these supports, the University Studies quantitative requirements have been a barrier to degree completion for a limited number of students with disabilities.  In an effort to respond to the extraordinary circumstances of these students while also maintaining the academic integrity of University Studies program requirements, the University has established a policy and procedure for considering academic accommodation to these requirements.

Policy

Academic accommodation for the University Studies Quantitative Literacy (QL) and Quantitative Intensive (QI) requirements are only considered after a student has demonstrated, through educational history and medical or psychological documentation, that he or she is unable to complete the requirements. Accommodations are granted on a case-by-case basis following a review by the Disability Resource Center and the Chair of the General Education Committee.  Accommodation is made by substituting alternative courses, as approved by the General Education Committee for required QL/QI courses.

Quantitative academic accommodations apply only to University Studies requirements and do not change the major requirements of any program of study. Students who have been granted a QL/QI must still satisfy all major and licensure requirements.

Procedure

1.  Students who have been diagnosed with or who may have a math related disability should meet with a counselor in the Disability Resource Center (DRC).

2.  The DRC will obtain disability documentation (if students have not been previously diagnosed the DRC will assist them in receiving an evaluation).

3.   The DRC will review disability documentation, prior academic performance in math courses, and the use of math related support (i.e. tutors, math instructors, lab instructors, Student Support Services, Academic Resource Center) in determining the appropriateness of QL/QI accommodations.

4.  If the DRC determines that a QL/QI accommodation is appropriate then an Academic Accommodation Petition will be sent to the General Education Committee Chair person.

5. The General Education Committee Chair person will evaluate the petition and communicate approval or denial to the DRC and to the students’ academic advisor.

6. Academic advisors will document the receipt of a QL/QI accommodation, help students understand the substitution classes they need to take, and advise students of any quantitative requirements specific to their major or licensure.
