Overview
The Applied Sciences, Technology and Education Department provides instruction to students seeking a certificate or an associate, baccalaureate or graduate degree. These innovative degree programs allow students to gain expertise in the fields of agriculture, applied sciences, machinery, outdoor product, and technology. Teacher licensure in Agricultural Education, Business Education, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, and Technology and Engineering Education are available.
The Applied Sciences, Technology and Education Department is accessible to students throughout Utah with faculty located at Utah State University campus, in Logan and several regional campuses. Students are encouraged to enhance their education through hands-on application using specialized classrooms and laboratories.

Undergraduate Programs
Mission Statement
- The mission of the Applied Sciences, Technology and Education Department is to apply the Land Grant University philosophy to teaching & learning, discovery, research, and outreach. The School applies a multidisciplinary systems science approach for the resolution of family, agricultural and applied science matters through the advancement of education, technology transfer, scientific inquiry, and agricultural mechanization.
- We prepare educators in agriculture, business, family and consumer sciences, and technology and engineering education.
- We apply research-guided practices as we recruit, prepare, and provide instruction for individuals in agricultural, family and consumer sciences, and technological advancement careers.
- We serve the people and dispense research-based information as we assist them with family, agricultural and technology issues, literacy, needs, opportunities, and challenges.
- We value serving all populations, developing the whole person, responding to the needs of the marketplace, and functioning as a part of the total higher education system.
- We use proven educational processes which include formal and informal instruction, experiential learning, leadership, and personal development at an undergraduate, graduate, and community-based level.
The department brings enthusiasm to the mission of Utah State University in supporting student-centered instruction. We believe in teaching students to be contributing members of their communities and societies.

Admission Requirements
Admission requirements for the Department of Applied Sciences, Technology and Education are the same as those described for the University for incoming freshman and most transfer students. See individual program listings for additional information and requirements.
University Honors Program
The University Honors Program offers students in all colleges and majors the unique opportunity to deepen their educational experience with hands-on practical applications of their academic knowledge. The Honors Program admits incoming, transfer, and existing USU students based on application. High achieving students with at least one year remaining are encouraged to apply. Graduate Programs
Admission Requirements
See general admission requirements. Applications will be considered throughout the year. However, students who wish to be considered for financial aid must apply by February 1 for the coming academic year. No application will be considered until all required information arrives at the office of the School of Graduate Studies.
Research
The ASTE Department conducts a broad range of basic, applied (action) and evaluation social-science research in the areas of agricultural communication, agricultural literacy, agricultural safety, agricultural systems technology, career and technical education, curriculum and instruction, environmental quality, leadership, non-formal education, Science Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), and teaching and learning. In addition to state and federal agencies that support research in the Applied Sciences, Technology and Education Department, the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, a component of the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, supports research in several areas.
Financial Assistance
Both departmental and formal grant support are available to graduate students and are awarded on a competitive basis. Students requesting financial support should apply to the department.
Research assistantships are available through faculty members who have ongoing projects with the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station or who hold special research grants from the University, private companies, or state-federal agencies. Acceptance to pursue graduate study does not guarantee the student financial assistance.
