American Studies - Minor

Department of English

American Studies minors must meet and maintain a 2.5 GPA admissions and graduation standard.

Students are required to complete the following:

B. Disciplinary Area Exploration Courses (6 credits)


Students must take one course from two of the following disciplinary areas (2 courses total): 1) American History and Government, 2) American Literature and Folklore, 3) American Social Sciences, 4) American Environmental Studies, and 5) American Art, Media, and Communication Studies. Courses fulfilling the requirement in each discipline are listed below.

Note: Some classes listed do not specifically note American content in the class title and the content must be approved by the program advisor for the class to be used toward the requirements. Please see advisor for courses that fall under this category.

American History and Government:


American Literature and Folklore


American Arts, Media and Communication Studies


C. Upper-Division Focus Requirements (6 credits)


Students must choose two additional courses from any of the disciplinary areas listed above, with strong encouragement to focus these courses in a single disciplinary area. Any of the courses listed above can satisfy this requirement as long as they are at the 3000 level or higher.

Double-counting: Courses cannot be double-counted. For instance, a student may use ENGL/HIST 3700 (Regional Folklore) to count for their “American Literature and Folklore” category requirement, but they cannot also use it to count towards their requirement for two upper-division courses.
