Global Communication Major Requirements (39 credits)


  • Total Credits: 39
  • Grade Point Average to Declare PPRU Global Communication Major: 3.0 Overall GPA
  • Grade Point Average to Apply for the Full Major in Global Communication: 2.75 Overall GPA (application required; contact academic advisor for details)
  • Grade Point Average to Graduate with Major: 2.75 GPA within major coursework
  • Credits in Residence: At least half (50 percent) of the credits earned for this major must be completed in upper-division USU courses. All other credits (including transfer and study abroad credits) must be approved by the faculty or academic advisor in order to be counted toward these degrees. As many as 19 credits completed at other colleges or universities may be used to partially satisfy these requirements. For more information, students should contact their advisor.
  • Minimum Grade Requirement: All courses taken for the major require a minimum grade of C- or better. Courses taken for the major may not be taken on a pass/fail basis, except CMST 5950 .
  • Notes: A minor or additional major must be completed in order to complete all requirements for this major. No more than 9 credit hours of the Global Communication major may overlap with an additional declared major.  

A. Culture General Requirement (9 credits)


B. Communication Specialization Requirement (15 credits)


Three courses must be completed from the student’s chosen Area of Specialization. Students must also take one additional course from each of the remaining two areas shown below for a total of 5 courses (15 credits):

D. Language/Culture Specific Requirement (9 credits)


One course (3 or 4 credits) is required from each of the three options below. Important: All three courses must be from the same language.

If your area of language expertise is not in one of the languages we teach, please see the department academic advisor for other options.

E. Practicum (3 credits)


The practicum may not be completed (nor enrolled in concurrently) until students have applied and been accepted as a full major in Global Communication. 

Student must also take CMST 1330  and CMST 3330  before enrolling in CMST 5950 .

It is best to have at least one year of study and coursework before the planned practicum semester. Students are responsible for arranging for their own practicum. Students are encouraged to find or create a practicum that is related to their personal interests and will serve their goals after graduation. The practicum should tie together various elements of the program through practical experience, in-service learning, or internship experience in a cultural community distinct from the student’s own culture. The practicum plan should include at least 135 contact hours. Planning for the practicum early or as soon as the student is accepted into the full major is recommended. Approval for a particular practicum experience must be granted by the student’s faculty advisor and the LPCS Department Head prior to the experience. Students should visit with the faculty advisor early in the decision process.

There are three options for a student to complete the practicum requirement.

  1. Global Engagement
  2. Institutional Global Experience
  3. Local Intercultural Experience.

Bachelor of Arts Degree Language Requirement


A Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree signifies proficiency in one of more foreign languages. Specifically, the BA requirement may be completed in one of the following ways:

  • Demonstration of proficiency in one foreign language by successful completion of one course at the 2020-level or higher (or its equivalent).
    OR
  • Demonstration of proficiency in American Sign Language by successful completion of COMD 4920  and COMD 4780 , and by passing an exit interview.
    OR
  • Demonstration of proficiency in two foreign languages by successful completion of the 1020 course level in one language and the 2010 course level in the second language (or its equivalent).
    OR
  • Completion of an upper-division (3000-level or higher) foreign language grammar or literature course requiring the 2020 course level (or its equivalent) as a prerequisite. Conversation courses cannot be considered for satisfying this requirement.

For nonnative English-speaking students only, the following options are available:

  • Successful completion of the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) program for international students.
    OR
  • TOEFL, Michigan, or IELI placement scores high enough to meet the University admission criteria.
