Department of Theatre Arts

Students must complete the General Education requirements 

  • Completion of one of the following Breadth requirement courses: ,  ,  ,  , or  . These courses have been suggested because they meet more than one requirement for Theatre Arts majors, or because the content relates to courses taken later in the degree programs.

Students must also complete the University Studies requirements 

  • Students in the Theatre Education emphasis (TEE) may use   and   to fulfill the Communications Intensive (CI) requirement
  • Complete at least 2 credits in approved 3000-level or above courses from each of the following two catagories: Life and Physical Sciences (DHA) and Social Sciences (DSS)

 

Bachelor of Arts Degree


A Bachelor of Arts degree in the General Theatre Arts Studies Program requires 63 credits. Requirements are as follows: core courses and production work (24 credits); performance courses (9 credits); design/technical courses (3 credits); dramatic literature/history courses (15 credits); and a university minor. To obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree, a student must fulfill the language requirement . At the present time, all students declaring a Theatre Arts major enter the department in the BA program.

A general theatre arts program study of theatre embraces a broad range of subjects, including acting, directing, theatrical design, history, criticism, and literature of theatre, as well as performance for the moving image and new forms of theatre and performance experience.

The BA degree is recommended for students who prefer a more comprehensive liberal arts background in theatre, and who are interested in pursuing graduate and other advanced study in theatre and other related subjects, as well as careers in stage directing or other related areas requiring a broad spectrum of  knowledge and experience. In lieu of a senior project, students in this program must select a minor in consultation with their advisor, and fulfill all requirements for the minor selected.

Bachelor of Arts Degree Language Requirement


Bachelor of Arts Degree

A Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree signifies proficiency in one or more foreign languages. Specifically, the BA requirement may be completed in one of the following ways:

  1. Demonstration of proficiency in one foreign language by successful completion of one course at the 2020-level or higher (or its equivalent).
    Or
  2. Demonstration of proficiency in American Sign Language by successful completion of COMD 4920  and COMD 4780 , and by passing an exit interview.
    Or
  3. Demonstration of proficiency in two foreign languages by successful completion of the 1020 course level in one language and the 2010 course level in the second language (or its equivalent).
    Or
  4. Completion of an upper-division (3000-level or higher) foreign language grammar or literature course requiring the 2020 course level (or its equivalent) as a prerequisite. Conversation courses cannot be considered for satisfying this requirement.

For nonnative English-speaking students only, the following options are available:

  1. Successful completion of the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) program for international students.
    Or
  2. TOEFL, Michigan, or IELI placement scores high enough to meet the University admission criteria.

Required Theatre Arts Courses (12 credits)


All Theatre Arts majors are required to complete the following core courses. (Note: Courses may not be taught during every semester listed.)

In addition, all students must complete a minimum of 6 credits of production practicum work:


Required Practicum Courses (6 credits)


Theatre Arts major and minor students are expected to work on all Utah State Theatre productions. All Theatre Arts majors are required to complete 6 credits of production practicum. Production work will be assigned based on the needs of productions and to give students a variety of practical experience.

Note: students should complete THEA 1513  and THEA 2203  before taking THEA 2555  (for lower-division students) or THEA 4750  or THEA 4850  (for upper-division students). Students will register for one production practicum each semester, except for the semesters they take THEA 1513  and THEA 5910  (Senior Project). Note: Additional production work is required for some emphasis areas.

Transfer students’ transcripts will be evaluated and a prorated production work requirement will be set at the time of admission to the program. Additional production work is required under some degree plans.

 

General Theatre Arts Studies Program


Minimum GPA for Admission: 2.75, USU; 2.75, Career
Minimum GPA for Graduation: 2.75, major courses; 2.0, USU; 2.75, Career
Minimum Grade Accepted: B- in each course required for major

Elective Dramatic Literature/History Courses (select 6 credits minimum)


Required Related Study Courses (12 credits minimum)


Since the study of theatre requires an understanding of many different fields of human endeavor, students choosing the BA degree must select courses in a related field of study approved by their BA advisor. This requirement maybe met by the completion of an approved minor that may require more than 12 credits to complete. The minor must be approved by the BA advisor before beginning any of the minor requirements.

Theatre Arts Departmental Requirements

  • Attend ALL department productions unless involved in the productions. (Ticket stubs should be signed and submitted to the office following each production.)
  • Usher at each department porduction unless involved in the production (Students take completion slips to be signed by the House Manager. Competion slips are submitted to the office following the close of the production)
  • Attend all production strikes

 

Note: When involved in a production, participation slips are submitted by the Stage Manager for that production in place of ticket stubs or usher slips.
