Jon M. Huntsman School of Business

Department of Data Analytics and Information Systems

Objectives

Data Engineering represents one of the fastest-growing sectors of the information economy. Data engineers provide critical support for the data pipeline, collaborating with their teams to obtain, manage, and prepare the right data needed to answer important questions and inform strategy. Well-qualified data engineers generally require experience in SQL, Agile project management tools, Python, JavaScript, web-based application program interfaces (APIs), and cloud architecture, and understand the applications of these in general business functions and processes. The Data Engineering Certificate program allows students to build these critical skills in as little as one to two semesters.

Careers in information systems and data technologies are multidisciplinary and require teamwork, critical thinking, and communication. Well-qualified applicants are encouraged to apply from any background in which they have developed and applied these skills. Potential applicants with little or no prior technical experience may first consider the Data Technologies Certificate .

Note that the Data Engineering Certificate can be completed on its own, or it can be stacked with any one of the other certificates offered by the Department of Data Analytics & Information Systems to meet the requirements of the Master of Management Information Systems degree program. (Click here  for more information.)

Admission

To begin the Data Engineering Certificate, applicants can submit an application form, along with the application fee and all undergraduate transcripts through the USU School of Graduate Studies at https://gradschool.usu.edu/apply/. TOEFL or IELTS scores are required for international students whose native language is not English. International students with a prior degree from a university in an English-speaking country are exempt from the TOEFL or IELTS exam. The School of Graduate Studies requires a minimum 3.0 GPA for the last 60 credits of prior undergraduate study.
