Department of Wildland Resources

The MS degree is offered for students motivated toward a management or administrative career in natural resources with an emphasis in forestry. The Forestry MS degree may be obtained through either a Plan A (research thesis) or Plan B (non-thesis) program.  

Degree Programs


MS Plan A (Students desiring research experience)


  • 30 required credit hours with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
    • 1 credit of Wildland Resources Departmental Seminar
    • 6-15 credits of Thesis Research (6970 )
    • 15 credits minimum of graduate level coursework (6000 level and above)
    • Up to 15 credits of 3000-5990 level courses, of these only 3 credits of 3000-4990 level courses
  • Approved supervisory committee
  • Approved proposal for thesis
  • Completion of committee and School of Graduate Studies approved 30 credit Program of Study
  • Successful defense of a thesis based on original research
  • Completion of required trainings and School of Graduate Studies required forms

MS Plan B (Forestry Professionals not pursuing a research career path)


  • 30 required credit hours with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
    • 1 credit of Wildland Resources Departmental Seminar
    • 2 but no more than 3 credits of Thesis Research (6970 )
    • 15 credits minimum of graduate level coursework (6000 and above)
    • Up to 15 credits of 3000-5990 level courses, of these only 3 credits of 3000-4990 level courses
  • Approved supervisory committee
  • Approved proposal for project/paper
  • Completion of committee and School of Graduate Studies approved 30 credit Program of Study
  • Production of a project/paper
  • Submission of a project/paper to the School of Graduate Studies and library for review and approval
  • Completion of required trainings and School of Graduate Studies required forms
