- Total Credits: 49 (20 credits + 29 STEP credits)
- Grade Point Average to declare German Teaching Emphasis Minor: 2.5 Overall GPA
- Grade Point Average to graduate with German Teaching Emphasis Minor: 2.5 GPA within minor coursework
- USU Credit Requirement: At least half (50 percent) of the credits earned for this degree must be completed in upper-division USU courses having prefixes of GERM or LING. Students who have completed Bridge Program Language courses should contact their advisor as these courses may count toward elective credits and credits toward minor requirements.
- Minimum Grade Requirement: All courses taken for the minor and STEP require a minimum grade of C or better. Courses for the minor may not be taken on a pass/fail basis, except SCED 3300 and SCED 5630 .
Note:
The following requirements only specify courses offered by the Department of Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies. To be licensed to teach in the Utah public secondary school system, students with a teaching emphasis must also complete additional courses (approximately 29 credits) required by the Secondary Education Program. Courses may be subject to change, and students should contact the Secondary Education Advising Office for a current course list of STEP requirements.
Students should note that only 1 credit from GERM 4920 may count toward the German Minor—Teaching Emphasis.
I. German and Linguistics Courses (20 credits)
A. Required Courses (14 credits)
B. Elective Courses (6 credits)
Select 6 credits from the following courses: Notes:
1 While this course is repeatable for additional credit, only one credit of GERM 4920 may count toward the German Minor - Teaching Emphasis and only two credits may count toward the German: Teaching Emphasis - BA degree.
2 GERM 4200 should be taken near the end of the student’s coursework. However, GERM 4200 is not offered every year. Therefore, students should check to see when the course will be offered.
3 Students desiring to apply study abroad credits toward these degrees must obtain approval form the LPCS office prior to participating.
4 SCED 3300 and LING 5400 must be taken during the same semester, and should be the last courses taken for the minor. These courses should be taken the fall semester before student teaching. SCED 3300 and LING 5400 are listed in both the STEP and minor requirements for those seeking the German Teaching minor/non-licensure so the non-licensure minors understand the complete list of minor requirements. See additional non-licensure information at bottom of page.
5 This course is taught in English.
6 This course is repeatable for additional credit.
Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) - Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies (29 credits)

(first semester in program) C. Level III
Because student teaching requires a major commitment of time and energy, students should take only the courses listed below during this semester. Students are also urged to forgo outside employment, if possible, during the student teaching experience. Notes:
1 The Special Methods II course is taught under course number 5400.
2 SCED 3300 and LING 5400 must be taken during the same semester, and should be the last courses taken for the minor. These courses should be taken the fall semester before student teaching. SCED 3300 and LING 5400 are listed in both the STEP and minor requirements for those seeking the French/German Teaching minor/non-licensure so the non-licensure minors understand the complete list of minor requirements. See non-licensure below.
German Teaching Emphasis Minor without Secondary School Licensure (Minor 19 credits)
(2.5 GPA required in major classes)
It is possible to have a teaching emphasis within a major or minor in German without receiving secondary school teaching licensure. However, unless the student is an elementary education major, he or she would not be able to teach in Utah public schools (nor at many private ones). Graduating without licensure may allow employment at community colleges and universities.
In order to complete the German Minor—Teaching Emphasis without Secondary School Licensure, students must fulfill all of the requirements listed under Section I (German and Linguistics Courses) of the German Minor—Teaching Emphasis with Secondary School Licensure (20 credits), except for SCED 3300 , for a total of 19 credits (SCED 3300 is no longer required if doing non-licensure program).
