Master of Education in School Counseling
(AAQEP - Accredited)

Completion of this program qualifies graduates for a professional educator license in K-12 school counseling in the state of Utah. Additionally, this program qualifies graduates for the College and Career Readiness Certificate required of Licensed School Counselors in the state of Utah. 

The program is delivered annually across the state, with new cohorts beginning each fall semester. Courses are broadcast, held virtually or offered online. Delivery method is determined based on best fit for course content and student learning.

Coursework is designed to train students in a broad range of skills, including K-12 college and career readiness, individual and group counseling for diverse populations; behavior and educational assessment and intervention; research and methodological foundations; and ethical, legal, and professional standards. Experiential learning in the form of practicum and internship placements is a critical component of the program.

Students of the MEd in School Counseling program must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Additionally, students must pass the Professional School Counselor Praxis exam to graduate from the program and be recommended for licensure.

The program is approved by the Utah State Board of Education and is fully accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP).

Disclosure of Educational Requirements for Licensure by State

USU’s MEd in School Counseling program adheres to the training standards of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and is accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP). Given the varied and changing requirements across jurisdictions, the department has not determined and cannot assure that graduates will meet all requirements for licensure in all states or territories. Students are encouraged to become familiar with relevant state licensing laws and discuss their curricular plan with the program director and advisors.     

This program meets the requirements in Utah.

School of Graduate Studies General Graduation Guidelines

Degree Verification. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited U. S. college or university or a similarly recognized international university is required for admission to and completion of a graduate program.

Overall Graduate GPA at least 3.0 and no grades of C- or lower. Graduate students are required to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA for degree-program courses. Grades of C- or lower will not be accepted for a graduate degree. Program requirements for the MEd in School Counseling program differ. All courses in the MEd School Counseling program require a grade of B- or higher. Grades below a B- will not be accepted. Students who receive below a B- in a course must retake the course. Students must mainitain a 3.0 GPA for degree-program courses.

Course Number Acceptability. The Program of Study for a master’s degree or a doctoral degree, if the student has a master’s degree, must include at least 15 semester credits at the level of 6000 or above. Credits in the following areas are not acceptable in a degree program: foreign languages (unless included in an approved Program of Study), continuing graduate advisement, individual home study, military science, and courses numbered below 3000.

Matriculation Start Semester. A master’s degree must be completed within six years of entering the degree program. Additional time may be requested by the student’s committee and submitted to the Vice Provost of Graduate Studies for review.

Coursework Validity. Coursework over eight years old at the time of degree completion may not be used for a graduate degree unless it is revalidated.

USU Residency Requirement for Master’s Degree. At least 24-semester credits for a master’s degree must be from a committee-approved and a School of Graduate Studies-approved Program of Study from Utah State University.

 

Approval of a Program of Study is required for master’s students by the School of Graduate Studies for an MEd in School Counseling.

    A passing score on the Professional School Counselor Praxis exam is required for graduation from the program. Students who take Praxis Exam 5421 between January 1, 2023, and August 31, 2023, must score a 164 or higher. Students who take Praxis Exam 5422 between January 1, 2023, and August 31, 2023, must score a 153 or higher. Beginning September 1, 2023, all students are required to take Praxis Exam 5422 and score 153 or higher to successfully complete the program and be recommended for licensure in the state of Utah.
