- Eligibility Requirements: This program has eligibility requirements for new first-year students, USU students, and transfer students from other institutions or programs at USU. Transfer students should have a minimum GPA of 2.75 to qualify for the program. All other applicants must be a student in good standing, with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Students who wish to complete this degree must do so with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The Agricultural Education, Community-Based major opens the door for students to instruct and lead community outreach programs, work in agricultural extension programs and provide other public and private organizations with expertise as a youth and adult educator. Students in community-based education develop a diverse background in nonformal education techniques, agriculture, leadership, human relationships, communication, analytical reasoning, critical thinking, effective writing, and teamwork. In addition to courses in agricultural education, the curriculum includes agricultural economics, animal, dairy, and veterinary sciences, plant and soil sciences, and natural resources. Classes in nonformal education provide skills in teaching methods for diverse audiences, volunteer program development and management, community programming, outreach development, program evaluation, and youth program development.
Students may engage in a community-based internship beginning in their junior year with an agricultural business, public or private organization, commodity group program, nonprofit organization, or Extension office. Through coursework and hands-on learning opportunities, students in community-based agricultural education will prepare to improve communities and teach global populations using their agricultural content knowledge and experience. This is a major for students who want to share their passion for agriculture through educating broad global populations.
