About This Degree

The Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education and Promotion prepares professionals to help individuals, groups, and communities to maintain or improve their health status.  Students gain a strong foundation in both the biological and social sciences.

Community and Public Health Emphasis: This emphasis prepares students to work in clinical settings, nonprofit health entities, wellness centers, private industry, and federal, state, and local health organizations. Students learn to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate interventions aimed at protecting or improving the health of individuals, communities, and populations. Students in this emphasis are prepared to take the professional competency exam that leads to certification as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) through the National Commission on Health Education Credentialing..

Minimum University Requirements


Admission Requirements For This Program


  • New freshmen must be admitted to USU in Good Standing.
  • Transfer students from other institutions or other programs at USU must have a 2.0 overall GPA.

Major Requirements (69 credits)


  • Students are required to earn a C- or better grade in all required HEP-prefix courses.
  • Pass/Fail grading is not allowed for required major courses, including electives.
  • A 2.0 overall GPA and a 2.75 major coursework GPA is required for graduation.
  • Any of the following statistics courses is a prerequisite for select courses in the major: STAT 1040 STAT 1045 STAT 1080 STAT 2000 , or AP STAT with a passing grade.

Required Elective Courses (select 6 credits, including at least one course from two of the following three areas)


Students must complete 6 credits of elective courses, taking at least one course from two areas (Human Nature, Content and Methods in Education, and Organizational Dynamics in the Family and Community).

Open Electives (0-24 estimated credits)


Total elective credit is determined by General Education courses taken, degree type selected, additional credits earned, and any additional math or other prerequisite courses needed. Please consult your  Academic Advisor for details.
