About This Degree

The Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education and Promotion prepares professionals to help individuals, groups, and communities maintain or improve their health status.  Students gain a strong foundation in both the biological and social sciences.

This Health Science emphasis is for students who plan to pursue a form of advanced medical training and for students who are interested in working in a health or medical setting but are still exploring career options in those fields. In addition to a core of courses focused on health and wellness, this program gives students maximum flexibility to tailor their coursework to meet their specific career goals.

Minimum University Requirements


Admission Requirements For This Program


  • New freshmen must be admitted to USU in Good Standing.
  • Transfer students from other institutions or other programs at USU must have an overall 2.0 GPA.

Major Requirements (68 total credits)


  • Students are required to earn a C- or better grade in all required HEP-prefix courses.
  • Pass/Fail grading is not allowed for required major courses, including electives.
  • A 2.0 overall GPA and a 2.75 major coursework GPA is required for graduation.

Any of the following statistics courses is a prerequisite for select courses in the major: STAT 1040 STAT 1045 STAT 1080 , or AP STAT with a passing grade.

Please note: MATH 1050  or higher may be necessary for students planning to take certain chemistry and/or physics courses or intending to go on to graduate school.

Health Science Professional Core Requirements (5 credits)


Complete all the following:

Professional Development Health Science (24 credits)


Must complete at least 24 credits from the following three areas. Important: Only 9 credits are allowed in the Social Sciences and Supportive Courses area.

Physical Science and Mathematics (0-24 credits)


Social Science and Supportive Courses (choose 0-9 credits)


Only 9 of the 24 Professional Development credits can be selected from the Social Science and Supportive Courses group.

Open Electives (0-16 estimated credits)


Total elective credit is determined by General Education courses taken, degree type selected, additional credits earned, and any additional math or other prerequisite courses needed. Please consult your Academic Advisor for details.
