About This Degree
The bachelor of music degree is offered through USU’s Music Department, which fosters a small, close-knit environment and provides students with the opportunity to receive private instruction, where they work one-on-one with professors to improve their performance skills.
Music Education Emphasis: Students in this emphasis prepare to become music educators. In addition to music classes, they learn teaching techniques through classes taught by the College of Education. Students in this emphasis can focus on band, orchestra, choral, guitar, or piano education. Students should check with the department for more information on the options available.

Minimum University Requirements
Admission Requirements For This Program
- Must pass entrance audition on primary instrument
- New freshmen: Admitted to USU in Good Standing
- Transfer students from other institutions or other programs at USU: 3.0 GPA
BM Music Education Core Curriculum (47 credits)
A minimum grade of a “C” is required for all Music Education Core Curriculum courses.
MUED Band Concentration (27 credits)
All individual instruction courses on major instrument must be passed with a grade of B- or better. All other music concentration courses must be passed with a grade of C or better. Major requirements may not be taken pass/fail, except those courses taught only on a pass/fail basis. Music requires a 3.0 GPA in music classes. An overall GPA of at least 3.0 is required for graduation.
Individual Music Instruction (7 credits minimum)
MUSC 1/2/3XXX Individual Instruction for Music Majors on major instrument (Students need 7 credits minimum to graduate, of which at least 2 must be upper division (3000 level).)

Small Ensemble (2 credits)
2 credits of small ensemble are required. Two semesters of the following in any combination will satisfy the requirement.
Large Ensemble (7 credits)
7 credits of large ensemble are required. Any combination of these two courses will satisfy the requirement.
Choral Ensemble (1 credit)
1 credit of choral ensemble is required. Any one of these courses will satisfy the requirement.
Music Education STEP (32 credits)
Students must maintain a 3.0 overall GPA and a grade of C or better in all STEP program courses.
Recital and Concert Attendance Requirement
To graduate, students are required to attend a minimum of 80 concerts or recitals. Recital and concert attendance is monitored and recorded in the Music Student Services office. Students should turn in programs after attending concerts and recitals for documentation of attendance.
Licensure Notification
This program typically leads to licensure and was designed to meet licensing qualifications in the state of Utah. If students wish to work in another state within the United States, they should review the qualifications for that state and the Education Licensure Compliance Table provided by School of Teacher Education and Leadership.
