Nursing - RN to BSN (online program)

About This Degree

Students build on their Associate Degree in Nursing to become outstanding nurses through relevant coursework with the advantage of a flexible schedule. In the RN to BSN program, students continue to practice critical thinking, and apply clinical reasoning to make decisions, manage healthcare resources, apply leadership and management skills, and gain additional experience in community and public health settings.

The RN to BSN Completion curriculum of study includes professional nursing practice, population health, evidence-based health care, health informatics, care of the aging adult, advanced health assessment, leadership, management and policy, health care trends and issues, and a final Capstone experience.

  • AAS graduates may need to take additional courses to satisfy all of the general education requirements.
  • Admitted and current students (USU AAS candidates) are required to meet with the RN to BSN advisor.

  • The highest math requirement for this degree is the Quantitative Literacy (QL) requirement .

Admission Requirements For This Program


USU’s RN to BSN program is an entirely online program that admits up to 45 students twice each year.

Applications are available on the Department of Nursing website and will be submitted online. Application dates are as follows:

  • Fall semester admission: January 1 - March 31
  • Spring semester admission: June 1 - August 31

Required qualifications for admission include:

  • Current, unencumbered RN licensure
  • Minimum GPA of 2.67
  • Graduation from an accredited associate degree RN program (ACEN or other U.S. Department of Education approved nursing program)
    • Minimum of 63 earned credits.
  • Submission of all required application materials by the due date listed for the preferred semester.
  • Submission of all official transcripts of previous education to the USU Logan campus Registrar’s office.

Major Requirements


Students must achieve a grade of B- or higher in all RN to BSN required courses. All bachelor’s degree requirements must be completed for the BSN degree. Students should contact the RN to BSN advisor for information and assistance in mapping their plan.

Licensure Notification


This program typically leads to licensure and was designed to meet licensing qualifications in Utah and other Nurse License Compact (NLC) states. If students license in any of these states, they are considered licensed and can work in any of the other NLC states. 

The Department of Nursing has not determined if this program meets licensure requirements in the non-NCL states, although it is possible as the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) requirements across the United States are the same.

Open Electives


Total elective credit is determined by General Education courses taken, degree type selected, additional credits earned, and any additional math or other prerequisite courses needed. Please consult your Academic Advisor for details.
