About This Degree:

The accelerated Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and Master of Landscape Architecture (BLA+MLA) program allows advanced Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning (LAEP) undergraduates the opportunity to pursue a combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program within an accelerated time frame. 

The mission of the accelerated BLA+MLA program is to prepare future professionals to address the dynamic issues and scales of landscapes across the Intermountain West and around the world and engage in creative intellectual work that contributes to the theory and practice of landscape architecture.

Admission Requirements For This Program


New freshmen: Admitted to USU in Good Standing

Transfer students from other institutions or other programs at USU: 3.0 GPA

Undergraduate students must matriculate (be accepted) to the program at the end of their sophomore year. Please contact the LAEP Department at (435) 797-0500 for more information.

School of Graduate Studies requirements:

Degree Verification

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university or a similarly recognized international university is required for admission to and completion of a graduate program.

Overall Graduate GPA at least 3.0 and no grades of C- or lower; Graduate students are required to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA for degree-program courses. Grades of C- or lower will not be accepted for a graduate degree.

Course Number Acceptability

The Program of Study for a master’s degree or a doctoral degree, if the student has a master’s degree, must include at least 15 semester credits at the level of 6000 or above.

Credits in the following areas are not acceptable in a degree program: foreign languages (unless included in an approved Program of Study), continuing graduate advisement, individual home study, military science, and courses numbered below 3000.

A master’s degree must be completed within six years of entering the degree program. Additional time may be requested by the student’s committee and submitted to the Vice Provost of Graduate Studies for review.

USU Residency Requirement

At least 24-semester credits for a master’s degree must be from a committee-approved and a School of Graduate Studies-approved Program of Study from Utah State University

Thesis Research Credits (6970)

The Plan A option for a master’s degree requires the preparation and defense of a thesis. Students are required to complete a minimum of 6 semester credits of thesis research (6970) with a maximum of 15 thesis credits applied toward a Program of Study.

Landscape Architecture Environmental Planning Courses Required for Matriculation (35 credits)


Students must matriculate (be accepted) to the BLA program. Matriculation is based on performance in the courses below and the submission of a design portfolio and letter of intent. Learn more by clicking here.

Thesis Courses (8 credits)


To be accepted into the combined BLA+MLA program, students must apply for the Master’s of Landscape Architecture Degree via applynow.usu.edu during their junior year. If accepted, they begin taking graduate-level courses during their senior year. Students only pay graduate-level tuition during their fifth year of study. Learn more on the LAEP website.

A Plan A thesis or Plan B paper/project option is required and is to be negotiated with the candidate, major professor, and supervisory committee. Every graduate student is required to complete 2 credits of LAEP 6970 , and an additional 3 credits of LAEP 6970  or 3 credits in LAEP 6960 , depending on plan type.

Elective Course (11 credits)


Elective courses must be 6000 level or higher. Students should consult their major professor when selecting elective courses.

Open Electives


Total elective credit is determined by General Education courses taken, degree type selected, additional credits earned, and any additional math or other prerequisite courses needed. Please consult your  Academic Advisor for details.
