Medieval and Early Modern Studies - Institutional Certificate of Proficiency

The Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS) Certificate is an Institutional Certificate of Proficiency that recognizes a student’s proficient knowledge of the history, cultures, literature, art, and religions of the Middle Ages (500-1500) and/or the Early Modern era (1500-1800). To receive the certificate, the student must complete 24 credits in approved medieval and early modern courses as delineated below. All courses counted toward the certificate must be completed with a grade of B or higher.

Core Course


Students must complete one of the following:

Foreign Language Courses


Students must complete six credits in a foreign language at the 2000 level or above.

Elective Courses


Students must complete 15 credits from among at least three of the nine disciplines below:
