Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services

Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education

The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) certificate of proficiency can be earned within the USU 1st or 2nd Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education - BA/BS (COMDDE) or following completion of at least a 2-year Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree in any area.

The SLPA certificate requires a total of 8 courses. To earn the certificate, students must meet the COMDDE minimum course grade requirement of C, pass the clinical experience course (COMD 5960 ), and have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 in the required courses. COMDDE courses may be repeated to improve grades up to a total of three times for a particular course or across courses.  Students may waive up to six credits of undergraduate Utah State University SLPA courses (excluding COMD 5960 ) equivalent to approved undergraduate courses from another institution.

To enroll in COMD 5960  (Clinical Experience), students must have work positions as SLP-supervised speech assistants or student interns in settings that allow them to carry out clinical duties that are in the SLPA score or practice. They must be in their final semester of the program with prior or concurrent enrollment in COMD 4200 .

Students who have completed a USU COMDDE bachelor degree, but have not yet completed all the USU SLPA certificate requirements may do so in post-bachelor status. In this case, the university requires completion of at least 6 credits of USU coursework additional to those counted toward the bachelor’s degree. Students should contact their advisor about course applicability.

For more information on the SLPA program and COMD 5960  requirements, see the department SLPA webpage at https://cehs.usu.edu/comdde/undergraduate/slpa.
