Chinese Minor Requirements (16 credits)
- Total credits: 16
- Grade Point Average to Declare Minor: 2.5 Overall GPA
- Grade Point Average to Graduate with Minor: 2.5 GPA within minor coursework
- USU Credit Requirement: At least half (50 percent) of the credits earned for this degree must be completed in upper-division USU courses having prefixes of CHIN or LING. All other credits (including transfer and study abroad credits) must be approved by the program’s academic advisor in order to be counted toward the minor. Students who have completed Bridge Program Language courses should contact their advisor as these courses may count toward elective credits and credits toward minor requirements.
- Minimum Grade Requirement: All courses taken for the minor require a minimum grade of C- or better. Courses taken for the minor may not be taken on a pass/fail basis.
- Students desiring to apply study abroad credits (CHIN 1800 , CHIN 2800 , CHIN 3800 , CHIN 4800 ) toward these degrees must obtain approval from the World Languages and Cultures office prior to participating.
A. Required Courses (4-7 credits)
Important Notes
- CHIN 2050 is a required transition course for students without extensive experience in a Mandarin-speaking environment. It must be taken after CHIN 2010 and before CHIN 3010.
- Students with at least one year of immersive Mandarin experience (e.g., returned missionaries) may waive CHIN 2050 or CHIN 3000. Please work with your academic advisor.
- Cantonese speakers are still required to take CHIN 2050.
Important Notes for Bridge Language Students: - Bridge students with an AP score of 3 or 4 must complete CHIN 3000 before enrolling in CHIN 3010 or any other upper-division Chinese courses.
- Not following this sequence may delay progress in the major.
B. Elective Courses (12 credits)
Only one credit of CHIN 4920 may count toward the Chinese Minor. Select 12 credits from the following courses: Bridge Program Requirements
Bridge Pathway: Students who have participated in a High School Chinese Bridge Program should follow the instructions below for successful completion of the Chinese minor. - Credits in Residence: At least half (50 percent) of the credits earned for this minor must be earned at USU. Bridge courses will count toward elective credits and credits in residence.
- AP Exam: Bridge students who received a score of 3 or higher on the AP Chinese Exam may register directly for 3000 level coursework. Students who scored a 3 or 4 on the AP Exam start in CHIN 3000 Chinese Conversation. Students who scored a 5 on the AP Exam or passed the placement test may start in CHIN 3010.
- Bridge Courses: CHIN 3116, CHIN 3117, and CHIN 3118 should be transferred to the Registrar’s Office if taken through another University.
If Bridge student successfully completed: - 1 Bridge course: Take CHIN 3010 and three more 3 credit upper-division Chinese electives
- 2 Bridge courses: Take CHIN 3010 and two more 3 credit upper-division Chinese electives
- 3 Bridge courses: Take CHIN 3010 and one more 3 credit upper-division Chinese elective
Upon completion, student should have 5 classes (16 credits) of upper division Chinese coursework to complete the minor, Bridge classes included. The bridge students who scored a 3 or 4 on the AP Exam must complete CHIN 3000 prior to enrolling in CHIN 3010 and other upper-division Chinese courses. Related Programs
