Utah State University welcomes students with disabilities. As a university, we are committed to full compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and all other relevant disability laws. The University is committed to providing students with disabilities reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids necessary to provide equal access. Reasonable accommodations will be implemented as long as 1) they are necessary for equal access (i.e. there is evidence establishing a relationship between the disability and the need for accommodation); and 2) they do not impose an undue hardship on the University or result in a fundamental alteration to the nature or operation of the institution, program, course, service, or activity.
Students needing accommodation(s) and/or academic adjustment must submit an application to the Disability Resource Center and speak with an Accessibility Consultant. The Disability Resource Center will engage in an interactive process to review the accommodation request(s), determine whether accommodation is necessary to provide equal access, and assign reasonable accommodations. In addition to traditional classroom activities, accommodations can be requested for anything related to the university experience including placement exams, on-campus housing, study abroad programs, University events and activities, and clinical or internship placements.
Accommodation requests made directly to instructors, even if implemented for a particular class, are not considered accommodations. USU employees should refer all student requests for accommodation to the Disability Resource Center.
Students are responsible for communicating accommodation requests to the Disability Resource Center in a timely fashion. Accommodations will not be applied retroactively.
Confidentiality
The Disability Resource Center (DRC) is committed to ensuring that all information and communication pertaining to a student’s disability is maintained as confidential as required or permitted by law. All documentation submitted to the DRC is kept separate from other academic records and is considered a student record under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). DRC records are maintained in secure electronic files. No person other than DRC staff has immediate access to these files.
In compliance with federal regulations, the DRC may share a limited amount of disability-related information with University personnel who demonstrate a legitimate need to know. Student transcripts and other University records will not indicate DRC participation.
