Undergraduate
Undergraduate students who wish to discontinue their studies for one or more semesters (with the exception of summer term) are encouraged to complete a Notification of Leave at https://www.usu.edu/able/nol//. New students should file an admission deferral at https://www.usu.edu/admissions/deferment/.
Former students of the university returning after an absence of three years or longer are required to file an application for readmission.
USU’s Changes in Registration: Dropping, Withdrawing, and Late Semester Requests policy explains how a Notification of Leave will affect a student’s transcript.
Graduate
All leaves of absence must be approved by the department head and submitted to the School of Graduate Studies. A leave of absence may be the basis for extending the time limit to complete a degree, but not to extend the time limit for course validity.
A leave of absence, during which neither continuous registration nor a $100 payment is applicable, may be granted under the following conditions:
- Illness, required military service, and other extenuating circumstances acceptable to the department head and the Vice Provost of Graduate Studies.
- Lack of availability of courses.
- Participation in a planned program based primarily on summer semester courses.
For the second or third condition to apply, the student must have an approved Program of Study.
A student needing to extend an approved Leave of Absence should contact their Graduate Program Coordinator. Should the reason for leave change, a new submission and approvals are required.
