University Studies Requirements

The University Studies program is intended to further develop the foundational learning outcomes of General Education.

Communications Intensive (CI) (2 courses)

For most majors, CI courses are part of your major requirements. CI courses are intended to further develop the communication skills learned in General Education within the context of your major.

Quantitative Intensive (QI) (1 course)

For most majors, QI courses are part of your major requirements. QI courses are intended to further develop the quantitative skills learned in General Education within the context of your major.

Depth Course Requirements

Depth courses are intended to further develop the breadth skills learned in General Education outside of your major category.

Students select approved upper-division course(s) from the two depth categories which do not include their major category: Depth Humanities and Creative Arts (DHA), Depth Life and Physical Sciences (DSC), and Depth Social Sciences (DSS).

The courses that must be taken to satisfy University Studies Depth Education requirements depend on the classification of the student’s major.

To satisfy the Depth Education requirements, students may complete the depth requirement in one of two ways.

  • Option 1: Four (4) credits completed in two or more depth courses outside of their major category.

  • Option 2: Three (3) credits minimum completed in one integrated depth course that meets the learning outcomes of two depth areas outside their major category

Depth Humanities and Creative Arts (DHA)

A minimum of 2 credits is required for all students whose major is not categorized as Humanities (HA) or Creative Arts (CA).

Depth Life and Physical Sciences (DSC)

A minimum of 2 credits is required for all students whose major is not categorized as Life Sciences (LS) or Physical Sciences (PS).

Depth Social Sciences (DSS)

A minimum of 2 credits is required for all students whose major is not categorized as Social Sciences (SS).

Integrated Depth Courses

A minimum of 3 credits completed in one integrated depth course that meets the learning outcomes of two depth areas outside the major category.

Categorization of Majors

The following tables list majors by college and classification and show which depth requirements a student in each major must satisfy.

The major categories are abbreviated as follows: HA—Humanities and Creative Arts, SC—Life and Physical Sciences, and SS—Social Sciences.
Please Note: major categories are not assigned by college, and some colleges offer majors in several categories.

All courses approved for the University Studies Depth Education Requirements are clearly designated in this catalog. The designations used for University Studies Depth Education courses are as follows:
