Overview:

The purpose of the School Library Media Administration (SLMA) program is to provide both pre and in-service teachers with the courses necessary to meet the requirements for library media K-12 endorsement as a school library media specialist/teacher in the state of Utah. It is assumed that the individual seeking teacher endorsement in library media holds, or is working toward, licensure as a classroom teacher. Students enrolled in the teacher education program at either the elementary or secondary education level at Utah State University may elect the program as an undergraduate minor. Other majors may also choose this as a minor.

Program:

The program is designed for students to begin with 2 courses fall semester, continue with 2 courses spring semester, and complete all requirements by the end of summer semester. Or students may take 2 years to complete the program by taking 1 course per semester. A practicum experience, which involves in-school observations throughout the school year is a major component in the program. The program consists of six courses for a total of eighteen credits. A minimum of fifteen of the eighteen required credits must be taken through the Department of Instructional Technology & Learning Sciences at Utah State University for a departmental recommendation to the Utah State Board of Education for endorsement. But students may apply, and be granted, the library media endorsement without a departmental recommendation. The SLMA courses are web broadcast on Tuesday nights each semester, with additional materials and assignment online through Canvas.

________________________________________________________

Completion of the coursework does not automatically guarantee a recommendation by the Instructional Technology & Learning Sciences Department to the Utah State Office of Education. A recommendation for the library media K-12 endorsement will be made when the student has:

  1. Approval of the practicum advisor
  2. Completed the program courses with a 3.0 or higher grade point average
  3. Demonstrated competency in all coursework
  4. Demonstrated interpersonal skills to work effectively with students and teachers

Directions for completing the online transfer student application form are available on the Instructional Technology & Learning Sciences website (http://itls.usu.edu/).
