Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services

Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education

Utah State University’s speech-language pathology program results in a Master’s of Arts (MA) or Master’s of Science (MS) in Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education with a specialization in Speech-Language Pathology. This post-baccalaureate degree is part of the Western Regional Graduate Exchange program (WRGP). The program in speech-language pathology is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).  Our program adheres to the Utah Speech-Language Pathology Professional and Educational Standards and prepares students for entry into the profession of speech-language pathology.

Students graduate prepared for employment in educational and healthcare settings and eligible for national certification and Utah state licensure. For licensure, given the varied and changing requirements across jurisdictions, the department has not determined and cannot assure that graduates will meet all requirements in all states or territories. Students are encouraged to become familiar with relevant state licensing laws and determine how to achieve any required additional requirements with the graduate advisor.

The two-year program consists of a minimum of 57-58 credit hours (32-33 credits of academic coursework and 25 credits of clinical coursework) across six semesters of full-time study beginning with a summer semester. Students complete a Plan B thesis project or Plan C comprehensive exam. Students must take the ASHA national exam (Educational Testing Service-Praxis test) and notify the department of Praxis results to graduate. The degree is offered in Campus and Outreach tracks.

To be accepted in the master’s degree program, students must have a bachelor’s degree in Communicative Disorders or the equivalent undergraduate prerequisite courses from USU or another regionally accredited university program.  Admission is on a competitive basis.

For further information on Campus and Outreach tracks, course sequence, admission requirements, and other program features, see SLP graduate program and COMDDE Policies.
