College of Engineering

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering provides each graduate with a foundation of knowledge and experience upon which to build successful careers in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineer, or space systems engineering.

Mechanical Engineering touches nearly every aspect of our modern lives. Mechanical engineers use principles of motion, energy, heat, controls, vibrations, solids, and material science to design and build mechanical devices that lift enormous loads or move microscopic components. Mechanical Engineers affect technological advancements in nearly every field and component of life today.

Our graduate programs emphasize research with faculty by focusing on high levels of student involvement providing enhanced preparation for engineering practice, research and education.

Three program plans are available for the Mechanical Engineering MS degree.

The Plan A Thesis requires 30 credits (minimum): 12 credits of 6000-level (or above) MAE courses (excluding MAE 6950 MAE 6970 , MAE 6990 , and MAE 6930 /MAE 7930  self-study); 3 credits of an approved math course (5000-level or above); 9 credits of approved technical electives; and 6 credits of MAE 6970: Thesis Research . At least 15 credits must be 6000-level or above. A thesis proposal and formal thesis defense are required. The thesis must meet School of Graduate Studies and MAE Department requirements.

The Plan B Report requires 30 credits (minimum): 12 credits of 6000-level (or above) MAE courses (excluding MAE 6950 , MAE 6970 , MAE 6990 , and MAE 6930 /MAE 7930  self-study); 3 credits of an approved math course (5000-level or above); 12 credits of approved technical electives; and 3 credits of MAE 6950: Design Project . At least 15 credits must be 6000-level or above. A project proposal and formal report defense are required. The report must meet School of Graduate Studies and MAE Department requirements.

The Plan C Coursework Only requires 33 credits: 18 credits of MAE 6000-level (or above) courses (excluding MAE 6950 , MAE 6970 , MAE 6990 , and MAE 6930 /MAE 7930  self-study); 3 credits of an approved math course (5000-level or above); 12 credits of approved technical electives, and at least 18 credits must be 6000-level or above.
