Program Description
Utah State University’s Applied GIS certificate enables undergraduate students to approach complex natural resource issues with the experience and confidence to inform research and data-driven decision-making using database linked maps and geospatial analysis. The Applied GIS Certificate is customizable to meet students’ disciplinary interests by offering a wide range of geospatial electives. In addition to foundational and advanced courses in GIS analysis utilizing the latest industry standard tools and software packages, courses include programming in R and Python, geovisualization, remote sensing, drone data collection and processing, database management, and a professional portfolio course designed to showcase geospatial proficiency and skillsets, giving students a competitive advantage when seeking job or research opportunities.
The 16-credit certificate is designed to be easily completed alongside a variety of majors. Required coursework includes courses in introductory and advanced geospatial analysis and one of two programming courses.
Students choose an additional two 3- to 5-credit elective courses.

Course Requirements
To receive the certificate, a student must complete the following set of requirements:
- Register for and successfully complete all 16 credits
- Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA for program courses (grades below C- will not be accepted)
- Abide by the Code of Policies and Procedures for Students at Utah State University
