Leadership and Diplomacy - Certificate of Proficiency

This certificate helps provide a multidisciplinary foundation that fosters greater awareness, knowledge, and skills for becoming more effective community leaders, communicators, and problem solvers with a focus on either the domestic or global level.

Leadership and Diplomacy Certificate Requirements (21 credits)


  • Minimum GPA for Admission: 2.5
  • Cumulative Minimum GPA in Certificate Coursework for Graduation: 2.5
  • Cumulative Number of Required Credits: 21
  • Students must select 1 of 2 academic tracks: Domestic or Global
  • CAPSTONE: a domestic or international internship
  • Courses may not be taken on a pass/fail basis except for those courses which are only taught pass/fail

Track 1: Domestic Leadership and Diplomacy


Students in this track must take the following core courses from the list of options: 1 Political Science course (3 credits), 1 Communication Studies course (3 credits), one Careers/Leadership seminar course (1 credit) and participate in a domestic internship (2 credit minimum), for a total of 9 credits.

ELECTIVE COURSES (12 credits)


Students can select a minimum of 4 division courses (3 credits each) from the following departments and colleges, although they must take at least one upper division course each from the Political Science and Communication Departments.

Track 2: International Leadership and Diplomacy


Students in this track must take the following core courses (5 courses, 12 credits) from the selected list of options and participate in an international internship (2 credit minimum), for a total of 12 credits.

ELECTIVE COURSES (9 credits)


Students can select a minimum of 3 division courses (3 credits each) from the following departments and colleges, although they must take at least one upper division course each from the Political Science and Communication Department.
