Portuguese Minor Requirements (15 credits)


  • Total Credits: 15
  • Grade Point Average to Declare Portuguese Minor: 2.5 Overall GPA
  • Grade Point Average to Graduate with Portuguese Minor: 2.5 GPA within minor coursework
  • USU Credit Requirement: At least half (50 percent) of the credits earned for this degree must be completed in upper-division USU courses having prefixes of PORT or LING. All other credits (including transfer and study abroad credits) must be approved by the program’s academic advisor in order to be counted toward the minor. Students who have completed Bridge Program Language courses should contact their advisor as these courses may count toward elective credits and credits toward minor requirements.
  • Minimum Grade Requirement: All courses taken for the Portuguese minor require a minimum grade of C- or better. Courses for the minor may not be taken on a pass/fail basis.

Bridge Program Requirements


Bridge Pathway: Students who have participated in a High School Portuguese Bridge Program should follow the instructions below for successful completion of the Portuguese minor.

  • Credits in Residence: At least half (50 percent) of the credits earned for this minor must be earned at USU. Bridge courses will count toward elective credits and credits in residence.
  • AP Exam: Bridge students who received a score of 3 or higher on the AP Portuguese Exam taken prior to starting Bridge classes may register directly for PORT 3040 without having to take any of the lower-division Portuguese courses or another placement test. 
  • Bridge Courses: PORT 3116, PORT 3117, and PORT 3118 should be transferred to the Registrar’s Office if taken through another University.

If Bridge student successfully completed:

  • 1 Bridge course: Take PORT 3040 and three more 3 credit upper-division Portuguese electives
  • 2 Bridge courses: Take PORT 3040 and two more 3 credit upper-division Portuguese electives
  • 3 Bridge courses: Take PORT 3040 and one more 3 credit upper-division Portuguese electives

Upon completion, student should have 5 classes (15 credits) of upper division Portuguese coursework to complete the minor, Bridge classes included.
