About This Degree

The American studies program offers students a sophisticated understanding of the issues, histories, and relationships that shape North American culture, past and present. This degree can lead to a number of professional careers in museums, law, government, state and national park services, public arts, humanities, nonprofit organizations, and academic settings.


With focus areas in the American West, Canadian and Mexican Borderlands, American history, literature, folklore, creative non-fiction, studies in visual culture, and the environment, the American studies program allows students to forge a plan of coursework that crosses both geographical and historical boundaries. Though housed in the English Department, students majoring in American studies will be exposed to a number of classes in other areas throughout the university. Students must also complete an 18-credit Area of Focus (which may also fulfill minor requirements) in an approved subject from the arts, humanities, or social sciences.

In order to help students achieve their career goals, the American studies program provides a number of internship opportunities in nearly every field of study, both nationally and internationally.

Students receive a by completing all required courses in the major. To receive a BA, students must also gain proficiency in one or more foreign languages.

  • Minimum GPA for Admission: 2.50-major; 2.50-USU; 2.50-overall
  • Freshmen must be admitted to USU in Good Standing
  • Transfer students from other institutions or other programs at USU must have a 2.50 GPA

Course Requirements


C. Foundation Requirements


1. Disciplinary Area Exploration (15 credits)

Choose five courses, one from each of the following disciplinary areas: 1) American History and Government, 2) American Literature and Folklore, 3) American Social Sciences, 4) American Environmental Studies, and 5) American Art, Media and Communication Studies. Courses fulfilling the requirement in each discipline are listed below.

2. Upper-Division Focus Requirements (15 credits)

Choose five additional courses from any of the disciplinary areas listed above, with strong encouragement to focus these courses in a single disciplinary area. Any of the courses listed above can satisfy this requirement, as long as they are at the 3000 level or higher.

At this level, American Studies students also have the option of choosing from the following additional courses:

American Studies majors must take an approved three credit upper-division American Studies capstone course. The director of the American Studies program will provide a list of approved capstone courses each semester.

Additional Information


Minimum GPA for Graduation: 2.50 in major coursework; 2.0-USU; 2.0-overall

Minimum Grade Accepted: C in major courses (courses may not be taken on a pass/fail basis, except ENGL 4900)

Credits in Residence: Students must complete 21 credits of major-applicable coursework at Utah State University.

Double-counting: Courses cannot be double-counted. One course cannot be used to fulfill more than one Required Core, Disciplinary Area Exploration, or Upper-Division Focus Requirement.

Note: Some classes listed do not specifically note American content in the class title and the content must be approved by the program advisor for the class to be used toward the requirements. Please see advisor for courses that fall under this category.

Open Electives


Total elective credit is determined by General Education courses taken, degree type selected, additional credits earned, and any additional math or other prerequisite courses needed. Please consult your  Academic Advisor for details.
