The Master of Science (MS) in Curriculum and Instruction degree (Plan A) is a research-oriented degree designed to prepare the candidate for further graduate study. It requires a strong relationship with a major professor who will serve as an advisor and supervisor of the master’s thesis. The thesis will consist of a major research project under the supervision of the major professor who will act as chair of a three-person faculty committee responsible to provide formal supervision and approval for the thesis. At the conclusion of the program, each student must complete/submit the following:
- exit interview
- exit survey
The degree requires 36 credits of coursework including 15 credits of core courses, 6 credits of thesis, and 15 credits of supporting coursework. All courses require a grade of C or better and students must maintain an overall GPA of 3. 0 or higher.
The MS is the degree suggested for candidates whose long-range goals include the possibility of pursuing a doctorate or teaching at an institution of higher education.
This program does not necessarily lead to a recommendation for teaching licensure from USU. Licensure is obtained directly from the Utah State Board of Education.

Degree Verification
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited U. S. college or university or a similarly recognized international university is required for admission to and completion of a graduate program.
Overall Graduate GPA
At least 3. 0 and no grades of C- or lower. Graduate students are required to maintain at least a 3. 0 GPA for degree-program courses. Grades of C- or lower will not be accepted for a graduate degree.
Course Number Acceptability
The Program of Study for a master’s degree must include at least 15 semester credits at the level of 6000 or above.
Matriculation Start Semester
A master’s degree must be completed within six years of entering the degree program. Additional time may be requested and submitted to the Vice Provost of Graduate Studies for review.
Coursework Validity
Coursework over eight years old at the time of degree completion may not be used for a graduate degree unless it is revalidated.
