About this Degree
The Master of Science (MS) in Biochemistry at Utah State University provides advanced training in the chemical and molecular principles that govern biological systems. The program is designed for students seeking to strengthen their scientific foundation, develop research expertise, and prepare for doctoral study or professional careers in biotechnology, health sciences, and related industries.
Students engage in rigorous coursework in biochemistry and related disciplines, building depth in areas such as molecular biology, metabolism, structural biology, and bioanalytical methods. Emphasis is placed on critical evaluation of scientific literature, quantitative analysis, experimental design, and clear scientific communication.
The program includes significant laboratory and research experiences under faculty mentorship, enabling students to develop technical proficiency with modern instrumentation and methodologies. Through thesis research or other approved scholarly projects, students demonstrate mastery of biochemical concepts and the ability to conduct systematic scientific investigation.
Graduates are well prepared for continued doctoral study, research positions in biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, government laboratories, and other science-based professions requiring advanced biochemical training.
Qualified undergraduate biochemistry majors at Utah State University may apply in their third year for admission to the BS-MS program. Students should consult with the chairperson of the Graduate Recruiting and Admissions Committee to be certain of their eligibility for this program. All requirements for the BS degree must be completed within two semesters of admission. The MS degree cannot include coursework counted toward the BS degree.
