About this Degree

The Master of Science (MS) in Chemistry at Utah State University provides advanced study and research training in the fundamental and applied principles of chemistry. The program is designed for students seeking to deepen their scientific expertise, strengthen their research skills, and prepare for doctoral study or professional careers in industry, government, and education.

Students complete rigorous graduate coursework across core areas of chemistry, including analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, with opportunities for specialization in areas aligned with faculty research strengths. Emphasis is placed on scientific rigor, quantitative analysis, experimental design, and effective written and oral communication.

Under close faculty mentorship, students engage in laboratory research using modern instrumentation and methodologies. Through thesis research or other approved scholarly work, students demonstrate the ability to conduct independent investigation, interpret complex data, and contribute meaningfully to the chemical sciences.

Graduates are well prepared for PhD programs, research and development positions in chemical and materials industries, environmental and regulatory laboratories, and other technical roles requiring advanced training in chemistry.

Qualified undergraduate chemistry majors at Utah State University may apply in their third year for admission to the BS-MS program. Students should consult with the chairperson of the Graduate Recruiting and Admissions Committee to be certain of their eligibility for this program. All requirements for the BS degree must be completed within two semesters of admission. The MS degree cannot include coursework counted toward the BS degree.
