About this Degree

The online Geographic Information Science (GIS) certificate is designed for graduate students or professionals wanting a competitive advantage in jobs or research requiring competency in applying industry-standard GIS tools to complex natural resource issues. 

Students who complete the program will receive a post-bachelor certificate in Geographic Information Science. Their USU transcript will list the courses and grades received to complete the program. The certificate is complementary to a wide variety of graduate programs and is available as a standalone certificate.

Technology Requirements
Students must have access to a Windows-based PC to complete this certificate. The program uses ArcGIS Pro, and licenses will be provided to all registered students. ArcGIS Pro does not run on macOS, and the software will not install on Apple operating systems. Students using Apple hardware must secure reliable access to a Windows environment prior to beginning coursework.

To receive the certificate, a student must complete the following set of requirements:

  • Apply and be accepted into the GIS Certificate Program

  • Register for and successfully complete four graduate-level courses

  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA for program courses (grades below B- will not be accepted)

  • Abide by the Code of Policies and Procedures for Students at Utah State University

Admission Requirements for this Program

Admission requirements can be found at the USU School of Graduate Studies (apply at https://gradschool.usu.edu/admissions/index). Students are expected to be admitted to the program as matriculated students before taking coursework leading to the degree.

Students pursuing the GIS certificate are not required to be enrolled in a graduate degree program. However, credits obtained from the certificate may be applied toward a graduate degree.
