About this Degree

The Guitar Performance degree at Utah State University has a strong legacy and has helped many students become international performers, educators, and writers. USU offers a unique experience for guitar students that transcends style by covering many styles (not just jazz and classical music).

We want our graduates to find THEIR voice but want them to arrive at originality with skills rooted in tradition that reflects dedication to their art. We want them to be original voices that are relevant, authentic and rooted so they will stand the test of time. We will work with students to help them become performers that will outshine the competition because of their work and training.

Program Specifics

Performance majors are required, and given the opportunity, to play in guitar ensembles, jazz combos, and jazz big bands, as well as work with large choirs and smaller groups such as duos and trios. We offer styles classes that prepare guitar performance majors to play authentically in blues, and American folk styles. The Fingerboard Theory class accelerates students’ knowledge of music theory, advanced jazz theory, and arranging for the guitar. There are many off-campus opportunities and venues to hone the skills that are worked on in class.

For specific information regarding coursework required to earn a Guitar emphasis, please refer to the BM Guitar Performance degree map.
