About this Degree

The TESOL certificate prepares students to teach English to speakers of other languages and develops professional teaching skills and intercultural competence skills. It offers the opportunity for hands-on practicum experience working with English Language Leaners (ELLs). The courses in this certificate focus on the application of pedagogic, linguistic, and cultural knowledge in the second language/ESL classroom, and adhere to the TESOL International Association standards. The certificate enables students to more easily obtain language teaching positions overseas or remote teaching positions. It may also qualify students to teach in the US, but does NOT qualify certificate holders to teach in the Utah K-12 school system. Courses may not be taken on a pass/fail basis. Courses are offered in the USU Connect mode where classes are held in-person at pre-scheduled meeting times with some students connecting virtually from other locations.
