Course Learning Outcomes

1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the equine digestive tract and explain how nutrients are digested and absorbed.
2. Analyze the nutritional and physiological demands of exercise in horses, including energy metabolism, muscle physiology, and thermoregulation.
3. Identify and evaluate common equine metabolic and developmental disorders and explain their relationship to nutrition and management practices.
4. Formulate and balance rations to meet horses’ nutritional requirements for growth, performance, and maintenance, adjusting for energy intake, forage quality, and activity level.
5. Assess body condition, feeding practices, and exercise programs and recommend evidence-based improvements to optimize equine health and performance.
