The instructor applicants will acquire skills around how students learn differently, have different needs, goals, strengths, fears, and weaknesses. 

The instructor applicants will learn pivotal job requirements such as: how to assess how the student is progress, adapt training as necessary, and watch out for learning plateaus. 

This requires skill, a bit of psychology, and a decent understanding of physical reactions. 

This is why the FAA enforces the Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI). The FOI helps new instructors understand and apply the principles of learning theory.
