BENG6210 - Upstream Processing in Biomanufacturing - 3 - Credits

Biological & Chemical EngineeringCollege of Engineering

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Develop an understanding of the overall workflow of upstream processing and be able to define and differentiate between key terminology and specific steps and be able to apply this knowledge to designing an end-to-end process.

  2. Compare and contrast the characteristics and applications of commonly used host cell lines (e.g., CHO, E. coli, yeast) in biomanufacturing.

  3. Compare and contrast different styles of bioreactors (traditional and single use bioreactors) and be able to select the proper equipment for differing process types.

  4. Design a logical and robust inoculum train to scale a cell culture from a cryovial to a production-scale bioreactor.

  5. Propose a scale-up/scale-down strategy for an upstream process, explaining the engineering principles that govern the transition from lab-scale to manufacturing scale.

  6. Be able to evaluate process data to evaluate areas of concern and be able to propose solutions.

  7. Evaluate emerging technologies such as PAT technologies and understand value.
