GEO5510 - Groundwater Geology (QI) - 3 - Credits

GeosciencesCollege of Agriculture & Natural Resources

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Know where groundwater fits into the hydrologic cycle, and be able to calculate baseflow recession

  2. Understand fundamental hydrogeologic concepts and know the definitions of key terms

  3. Know how to quantify the abilities of geologic materials to store and transmit groundwater

  4. Understand hydraulic head and fluid potential, and be able to construct both qualitative and quantitative groundwater flow nets

  5. Become familiar with flow system analysis, including both the analytical and numerical approaches, as well as local, intermediate and regional groundwater flow systems

  6. Know how to use pumping test data to calculate transmissivity and storativity

  7. Understand basic groundwater chemistry, and be able to present hydrochemical data using several graphical techniques

  8. Understand the basic principles of groundwater contaminant transport, including transport through homogeneous, heterogeneous and fractured media, as well as retardation

  9. Become familiar with the fundamental concepts associated with groundwater development and management
