GEO5520 - Techniques of Groundwater Investigations (CI) - 3 - Credits

GeosciencesCollege of Agriculture & Natural Resources

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the differences between piezometers, monitor wells and water-supply wells

  2. Understand the differences between the five main drilling techniques; namely, cable tool, mud rotary, air rotary, air percussion and reverse-circulation rotary

  3. Know how to drill and complete a water-supply well, including installation of the casing, well screen, filter pack, seal(s) and pump, as well as well development and rehabilitation

  4. Know how to drill and complete piezometers and monitor wells

  5. Understand which hydraulic parameters can be measured in a laboratory, and which techniques are available to measure them

  6. Know how to conduct, and calculate hydraulic parameters using, step-drawdown, specific-capacity and slug tests, as well as other single-well and multiple-well hydraulic tests

  7. Know how to measure water levels in wells

  8. Know how to measure the discharge from a pipe and of a stream

  9. Know how to collect water samples from wells

  10. Become familiar with groundwater tracer tests, including both single-well and multiple-well tests, as well as various types of tracers
