GEO5570 - Engineering Geology (QI) - 3 - Credits

GeosciencesCollege of Agriculture & Natural Resources

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe soils and determine their physical characteristics, such as grain size, water content and void ratio

  2. Classify soils

  3. Determine compaction of soils

  4. Understand the importance of soil investigations and be able to plan a soil investigation

  5. Understand the concept of effective stress

  6. Determine total and effective stresses and pore water pressures

  7. Determine soil permeability

  8. Determine how surface stresses are distributed within a soil mass

  9. Specify, conduct and interpret soil tests to characterize soils

  10. Determine soil strength and deformation parameters from soil tests; for example, Young’s modulus, friction angle and undrained shear strength

  11. Discriminate between “drained” and “undrained” conditions

  12. Understand the effects of seepage on the stability of structures

  13. Estimate the bearing capacity and settlement of structures founded on soils

  14. Analyze and design simple foundations

  15. Determine the stability of earth structures; for example, retaining walls and slopes
