1. Students will gain broad knowledge of the history of the Ottoman Empire and its impact on the societies in the Middle East, Balkans, and eastern Europe (ca. 1300-1900).
2. Students will compare experiences across different eras and regions within the Ottoman domains to identify enduring historical issues.
3. Students will construct well-reasoned arguments based on primary and secondary sources in Ottoman historical writing.
4. Students will analyze how religious values (Muslim and Christian) and institutions shaped Ottoman culture and governance.
