Define disability and describe various models that describe disability, its causes, treatment, and impact on society and the individual;

Become familiar with strategies to accommodate the needs of individuals with disabilities by removing environmental barriers, using assistive technology, and implementing concepts of universal design;

Become familiar with societal responses and historical treatment of persons with disabilities;

Become familiar with the Disability Rights Movement and the power of language within the disability community (i.e., person first vs. identity first language);

Examine individual, family, and community responses to disability and social prejudices;

Better understand the disability experience, particularly from the perspective of those with disabilities and their family members to foster positive and realistic attitudes;

Become familiar with the disability community and its varied roles in society; and,

Become conversant with current political, social, and economic issues affecting the disability community and become familiar with the self-advocacy movement.
