Course Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate a working understanding of the history of special education, current laws (IDEA, Section 504, ADA), and the impact of curriculum standards on students with disabilities.
2. Define and explain the special education service categories outlined in IDEA, including possible causes and prevalence rates of various disability categories.
3. Describe characteristics, needs, and evidence-based interventions, accommodations, and instructional methods for students served in each disability category.
4. Identify and utilize family, school, and community roles and resources for serving exceptional students.
5. Recognize and apply key components of behavior management plans and strategies to support positive student behavior.
6. Apply knowledge of IDEA processes—including evaluation, IEP development, and transition planning—to ensure that students with disabilities receive services that uphold their individual rights.
7. Reflect on and evaluate how personal experiences, beliefs, and assumptions influence professional relationships with students with disabilities and their families.
8. Compare and contrast legal protections under Section 504 and IDEA, and apply this understanding to support students effectively in classroom and therapy settings.
9. Identify problem behaviors, determine potential causes, and develop realistic solutions to address and reduce these behaviors.
10. Select and implement appropriate strategies, accommodations, resources, and materials to differentiate instruction for individuals and groups of learners.
